Oil filter stuck - Help!!!

Trying to change the oil filter in my 60 bugeye - 1098 engine. A spin on adater was installed at some point. Tried removing the oil filter through the little cutout in the frame behind the front wheel. Was able to grab the filter, but I guess it was on too tight. The filter got crushed on one side when I tried to remove it. Now I have no more travel with the wrench. Any ideas - that filter really needs to come off.

Can always poke a screw driver through it.

When replaceing only snug by hand pls.

It was only hand tight - but I think it's been on for about 18 months - not good I know - maybe that is it. What would poking a screw driver through it do? - how would one accomplish that - not sure I have the room to be able to do that. Do you bang it through with a hammer - access through the opening in the frame? Thanks

Now there is a thought. Yep, I agree.

And, for next time, buy one of the cup type wrenches that has the adapter on the bottom for a 3/8" ratchet and extension.
A valuable tool.

Use to do that from time to time on the old Ford engines but we did have a bit more room.

I think the remove the whole filter adapter/unit is the way to go.

You can get a filter remover tool that ratchets closed. It has three claw type L-shaped rods to grab the filter on opposing triangular corners. It ratchets with gear drive and has a socket head to insert an extension or ratchet, or breaker bar. Any tool truck and most well equipped, professional industry parts houses carries it, or can get it for you.

I remember I bought mine from Napa, it was around 14 dollars, but that's been a loooooong time ago. Can't give you the part number on it, as it's in my storage shed 20 miles from here, right now.

When you go to put the new filter on, put a light coat of grease, or oil, on the gasket, make sure the contact surfaces are wiped clean, tighten the filter hand tight where the gasket contacts the sealing surface, then no more than 1/2 turn tighter. Should be a lot easier coming off in the future.

I found out wit hBugsy my '68 Sprite with a 1098, unbolting the entire adapter and disconnecting oil cooler hoses and putting assembly on the bench is the fastest and less skin left behind method to changing the filter.I order up 2-3 gaskets for the filter adapter at a time and have them hanging on the wall above my workbench. Spin on adapter a great idea but the one I've got is almost impossible to get at and remove the filter.
