Whats the consensus around here on oil detergents?
Was thinking of adding CD2 oil detergent to the new oil change just for good measure and wondering if it would be a good thing since this car hasn't been cranked in a long time.
 
As long as the engine is not sludged up, it won't hurt a thing. If it's sludged up, the super high detergent will clean off the sludge and if it's heavy enough, it can plug the oil pump screen and then disaster strikes. Sludge usually forms on the valve cover first as it's the coldest part in the system. No sludge in the valve cover, there shouldn't be any in the engine. Assuming no one has cleaned it prier to your inspection! Most oils today have enough detergent in them to keep an engine clean, but it must be changed at the recommended intervals. For normal driving, never use a NON detergent oil! Some racing oils are NON detergent. Thanks for the info and link, always used Castrol oil and haven't pulled the valve cover off yet to inspect, definitely don't want to add more problems to getting my car running again.
