OIl cooler hose stuck

Anyone have a trick for getting the oil cooler hose off the oil cooler. Mine is frozen on so tight that I'm afraid I'll brake the fitting on the oil cooler if I try to twist any harder.javascript:%20x()
 
Those fittings can be a bear sometimes. Use a second wrench to provide countertorque to prevent twisting the aluminum on the cooler. If that doesn't help, then take the whole thing out with hoses intact and try to apply a little heat. This may be destructive. Save up your coins for a new cooler, you may be needing one.
 
I just remembered something else. Sometimes, if the stars are aligned, you can get those connections to loosen by trying to tighten a bit first before trying to loosen.
 
Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to have to heat it up to get it off. I have torqued on it as hard as I dare.
Just checked on the cost of a new one from Moss ($99 for 13-row). Wow, maybe I'll just leave the hoses on it and clean it up as it is.

If you take two wrenches and set them up to where you can squeeze them like a big pair of plyers. A lot of people way over tighten them and it can screw up the threads on the cooler. They don't have to be way tight. Just snug them down good. The tapered flange will take care of the rest.

This oil cooler is the origional from the factory on my 73 B. It has never been taken apart. I think there is some corrosion holding it together.
I soaked it in WD40 and I tried the "plyers" method with two wrenches but it started to distort the metal between the two wrenches.
I wanted to install braded SS steel lines on the cooler, but there is nothing wrong with the hoses on there now. If I can't get it off by heating it, I'll just run it the way it is until I can afford a new one.
 
Mark...I may of missed something...is the cooler still hooked up in the car? Is the engine still hooked to the cooler lines? Won't heating it possibly cause other problems - fire, damage to rubber lines?
 
Mark - sometimes the flare surfaces rust together. That's bad news. If you are able to get the hose off, then the flare may leak after it's reattached because the sealing surface is pitted. You may be looking at new hoses AND a new cooler.
 
Sorry for the confusion Tony. The engine is out of the car. The oil cooler lines have been disconnected from the engine, but I can't get the lines off the cooler.

I didn't think of the new lines not sealing on the old cooler. Probably I'll just leave it as it is. At least I'll have a good oil cooler (with ugly lines) when I get the freshly painted body shell back in a few weeks. I'll just have to save my pennies for a new one. Maybe a 16-row cooler as added insurance against those 99F degree Gerogia summer days!
