Oil cooler engine adapters for a 1275

What size and kind of threads are on the engine of a 1973 1275 for the oil cooler hoses to adapt to? I think the orifice on the oil filter is just a standard 1/4" NPT thread, but what is the one on the back of the engine. Also, What size and type of threads are on the oil cooler? Thanks for the help!!

Bob:

Good question, I stole my whole setup from a 71 Midg. I do recall wanting shorter lines, due to relocation and having swipped up every one that I could find on a LBC from the Jyard.

Eventually, I got two shorter ones that fit, but there were quite a few that seemed to me, like they had a different thread.

Sorry, this may not be of any help.

I bought a new kit through Tony from Victoria British and it just has straight adapters. It would make for a better installation if I could find some 45 or 90 degree adapters so I could route the hoses lower. Help!!

One suggestion I you cannot find what you are looking for find a tractor or heavy equipment supplier. They make up and crimp all kind of hoses for hydraulic lines on big equipment and fork trucks , etc. They used to have the crimpers and crimps for hoses at my work when we used to work on fork trucks, but that is all contracted out now adays.

The threads in the block are 5/8"-18 I don't think they cross to a BSP size, or at least I haven't found the right fitting.

5/8"-18 is a somewhat common power steering thread size. They make an adapter to go to -06 JIC / AN hose. -06 hose is on the small size for feeding most oil coolers but it can be adapted. It is 3/8" ID so it is slightly larger than the factory 3/8" OD tubing from the banjo to the filter, but it isn't a straight shot to the filter anymore so there is more restriction in the hose and fittings. I like to run -08 hose, 1/2" ID, so I made my own adapter, or actually two.

For the first one I drilled out a -08 AN plug 3/8" and brazed it to the 3/8" banjo line (very similar to steel brake line). Since the "new plug" and hose will but a lot of stress on that 3/8" line I kept it as short as possible. This worked well and I am still using it on one car, but it doesn't look as clean as I would like. The next one was a 5/8-18 bolt with the center drilled out to 1/2" and a steel -08 fitting welded to it.

As you said, the filter head is 1/4" NPT.

As for the cooler, we'd need to see it since there are many different one out there. As mentioned previously, bringing it to a store that makes hydraulic hoses is probubly your best bet.

One time a very long time ago I hooked up an oil cooler to my Mini (same engine) using air conditioning fittings (rated for 500 PSI) from a generic after-market air conditioning kit. It worked fine and I could get straight as well as 45 and 90 degree bent ones. I also used the air conditioning hose that fit. (Did I say that I worked as an automotive air conditioning mechanic in the summer between semesters?). These large fittings threaded on perfectly and didn't look too bad either.

If it is a 5/8-18 then it is a straight thread and wont cross to pipe as all pipe threads are tapered and get there seal from the taper. The straight threads dont's seal and need a gasket or seal to hold the pressure. Mine has a paper gasket under the lip.

There is parallel and tapered British standard pipe threads, BSPP and BSPT. 3/8 BSPP is 5/8"-19. I haven't been able to find a 3/8 BSPP to -08AN adapter to test out. If anyone has a source let me know.

Wow, I learn something every day.

Thanks to all that responded. I was able to find a 90degree adapter the matched the threads on the hose ends. It was a male to female swwivel. Worked great!!!@
