Just changed the oil in my 18GK engine for the first time since it was rebuilt. It only needed 3 litres of oil to bring the level up to the full mark on the dip stick. The manual has the sump holding 4.26 litres, filter .57 L and cooler .42 L. Is my dip stick the correct one?? It shows the oil level as 9.5 inches down from the top of the dip stick tube.

Did you start it yet? Did you change the filter? After starting, the filter will fill up. The cooler won't make much difference, nothing really drains from it with an oil change. If you had the plug in the pan before you took the filter off, the leakage in the filter (top loading) will drain back to the pan. Did the pan get bent?

Mine (in a GH engine) also measures 9.5 from the top of the tube to the full mark. The engine takes roughly the amount of oil stated in the manual.

Thanks for the help... The oil level is OK as it is at the 9.5 inch mark.The oil pan is not dented I think it all works out this way 4.26 L for a fill if system is empty. Subtract the cooler and filter volume and that leaves 3.27 L oil for a change. The level was taken after starting the engine to fill the filter and oil lines.
