I'd like to put the best filters in the gt6 that I can, but can't find anywhere that lists the upgrade possibilities, even our archives here. K&N has none listed at their site and Spitbits and VB and TRF only show the one standard choice. Any other sources would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if it's the same for a GT6 but K&N HP-2004 oil filter fits a Spitfire.
 
Try the "K & N Air Filters" link on the left side of T S Imported Auto's webpage. If you see your carbs listed there, he's got 'em in stock and the prices are favorable. I got mine from him.

Of course, the question there is whether the K&N filter is really an upgrade or not. The tests I've seen say they don't actually filter the air as well as conventional filters; which of course is entirely in keeping with their claims of less restriction to airflow. So I guess it boils down to whether you are more interested in squeezing out that last bhp; or having your engine last longer.

I've also heard that if they get wet in service, they can shed bits of fiber into the intake. Friend of mine threw his away, after the bits of fiber clogged some carb air bleeds on his 914-6.
 
Aside from the possibility of throwing bits of fiber into the intake, they <span style="font-style: italic">have</span> to filter better than the wire mesh things that came on the TR3. <span style="font-style: italic">Anything</span> has to filter better than that...
 
I bought a foam filter at Sears for my industrial vacuum cleaner and cut it into 4 pieces to fit over my original air filters. Then i dribbled on a bit of special Amsoil Oil called "For Foam Filters".

:iagree: However, I believe the GT6 came with paper element filters. And the paper element filters from a TR4A will bolt right onto a TR3. Won't win any awards for originality of course, but then neither will the K&Ns (which are available for a TR3 from Moss).
 
Well the TS Imports page lists them, but at $65 each. that's a bit more of an "upgrade" than I had in mind. I've got them on my B and don't recall the cost as being quite so memorable. So perhaps the standard, or even a WIX will be the ticket. I've got plenty of items to spend money on that can't be avoided. I did pick up a dandy glass fuel filter that you can see through and see if you're pumping clean gas but now I can't find them anywhere. Anyone seen these?

In my simple view of life, I do not see K&N air-filters as upgrades for road use. The only way to get much higher throughput for the same area of filter is to have media that is much less restrictive, which has negative connotations for me. Unless I can use a larger filter, I’d rather use simple stock filters and change them frequently. It’s also another excuse to tinker.

I use FRAM Toughguard for my spin-on oil filters, which is probably against the grain as well. At the basic level, I believe all filters do a good enough job. In my opinion, Toughguard have a better non-return mechanism that the basic and cheaper FRAM and other ranges, and we are only talking cents difference in cost. Another case of using simple readily available filters and changing them frequently.

I agree, buy standard and change as needed, any tinkering that doesn't require jack stands is always welcome! Great looking GT,I'll be using your site as I restore my '70. are those original style seats?

I did not do the restoration, but all I've been able to research puts the seats as OEM. Mine is a very late non-rotoflex car. Just getting to the time of year here when the daytime temps drop and driving a fixed head coupe without a/c gets to be fun again. The GT6 motor might not have much power, but it sure is sweet. Good luck with the restoration.
