And the character of Basil was inspired by the original owner of Gleneagles - Donald Sinclair. Interestingly, in the movie "Rat Race" with Whoopie Goldberg, the character played by John Cleese is named Donald Sinclair.

The building that served as the outside of Fawlty Towers on the TV show was actually The Wooburn Grange - a country club which burned down in the early 90's.
