Anyone out there have a decent 1275 ribcage tranny for sale? Or an historic "box o parts' containing springs and detent balls for the gears on the main cluster of said tranny? Lake of the Ozarks is around the corner and im way behind!!!!!!
there should be someplace to get those balls...
i dropped one in the floor once and got real
worried for a few minutes....
maybe try ebay for the whole gearbox ....zimmy
No, they are not all the same, a couple are round like ball bearings, and a couple are oval (like a caplet). a couple require springs behind them and a couple do not. I may have some in a box full of tranny parts, but it will take a while for be to dig and rummage to find them, it would help to know which ones are needed!
By your area code it appears that you live in West Tennessee. I don't have any resources there but you might give Mark Endicott with the Nashville club a call. His number is 615-758-8093 I believe.
The Mini gearbox shares a few parts with the rib case gearbox. From memory, the detent balls that go in the gears are 7/32" in diameter. You can order them from McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) in bags enough to do several transmissions. I think the springs are available new from Mini City in NY state. (Lousy online site but OK phone support). Of course, I'm sure the springs are available elsewhere. The shift linkage probably uses the elongated detent ovals like Bugimike said.
You are correct Jack, but there are also two access plugs on the bottom of the tranny, one for the reverse detent, (round and with a spring) and the other ("bean" shaped) which goes between the first/second rod and third/fourth rod.
my problem was one of the "bullets"
was backwards causing me to stick in
neutral.......there are 2 balls, 2 bullets....total.
ill consult my paperwork and see if
i can locate ur problem.....z
victoria Brit has the balls, pegs and springs in addition to the fibre gaskets.
Unless youve mapped out eggzacly what came out of the trans and where (some P.O. worked on trans just might not have been re-put together right) you might get an Autopress or bently manual to accompany your rework.
WOW! Thanks to all for your input. Im really confused now and drinking quite heavly at this time. I did however find that VB stocks ALL of the parts so I have decided to start from scratch. You guys are great! I like this forum better than the Mozz forum....they seem a bit snooty at times. I still would be interested in a good used 1275 ribcage for a spare.
Yes, that sound right! It's been a while since I messed with them, so my memory might be a bit vague, but its is pretty basic and straight-forward. Just follow a good manual and it should work fine! The first tranny I ever did was a three-time tear-down because I wasn't putting the detents in properly, but once I got it right all went very smoothly!!! At a certain assembly-point you can bench-test the shifting to make sure you have it working OK before you put it back in the car like I did!
I've got a used ribcage out of a '65 Sprite--problem is I'm way out in Montana. Don't know what one of these is worth but it would be cheap xcept for the shipping. John M
