So it's 4:30 am and I'm getting ready to head to the airport to fly out to Sacramento with a buddy to pick up my newly purchased Toyota FJ40 and drive it home to Utah. First time I've done the fly-and-drive as I've either shipped or trailered these things before.

It'll be an adventure for sure! Going to take 2 days to do the drive back. It's about 11 hours of driving. As long as we can make it over Donner pass today the rest is just a fairly boring drive across Nevada.

Simple directions, though. Get on I80 in Sacramento, get off in Park City, UT.

I think it's too late in the year to try and get through the Donner pass...you know what happened back in 1846...

:eeek:

If not, I hope your buddy is plump and slow.

Oh, and don't forget the A 1...

Sick!!!! :iagree:

If the Donner party had a Toyota FJ40 they'd have made the trek and the pass would be just another cut.

Do a Blitzen! drive like a Comet, and you'll Dasher right over Donner pass! HO HO HO

Drew I bet you do the entire drive today! 10am pickup, 2 drivers and home by 9pm. The weather is perfect and once you get past Reno there is no reason to stop, unless you need gas!

Hey, wait a minute! Casinos, casinos, casinos - Did I say casinos?

Have a great trip! I love these road trips and it's probably better with a buddy.

I did a 24 hour round trip by myself (stopping for gas only) when I picked up the A35 in Ontario (and a similar 22 hour drive to pick a car in western Ohio in '08).

These trips are always memorable for one reason or another.

My favorite road trips were;
leave after work on Friday. Drive all night. Get to the track early on Sat. Sleep at the gate for an hour and race all day Sat

Oh it was fun to be young!

One memorable racing trip was:

Friday.....Charlotte to Montgomery, AL....Race Saturday.

Saturday overnight....Montgomery, AL to Milwaukee, WI...Race Sunday.

SCCA Nationals....won both venues.

Made it as far as Winnemucca, which is about 1/2 way. Truck is running great, cruising at a steady 60 mph. Only issue so far is operator stupidity, as I left the gas cap at our first gas stop. Ah well...

Overall I'm happy with the purchase. Needs some work, but it's a solid vehicle and as I expected. Few more hours of driving tomorrow and we'll be safely home.

Drew,

Don't forget to check the gas cap.
Winnemucca? How much excitement can you stand?

He could make it to Wells Nevada.
I should have told you about the
hamburger joint at the top of Donnor Pass.
You could have got the
All American Burger, it only takes
1/2 dozen humans to make.

Can't complain about Winnemucca, perfectly servicable Holiday Inn Express and looks like they have an auto parts store so I can replace the gas cap.

Made it home safe and sound. Got the gas cap sorted due to a very helpful parts guy at the O'Reilys in Elko -- had to modify the one I had found to add a vent (they had a drill and were not afraid to use it). Hit some nasty snow east of Wells, NV that lasted for a couple hours.

Truck is safe and sound in my garage, and I've already started a parts list. Really, it ran great, held a steady 60 mph without any issues at all. 720 miles over two days, not bad for a first drive.

Congrats! I'm just a tad jealous (OK a lot) - of course now we need more pics.

Congrats!
It is always nice
when you can get something that you want
instead of something that you need!

Look like you made a great buy Drew. Good luck with it. They were much better than the small Land Rovers of the same era! PJ

Bought one Land Rover new! Never own another!
Broke axles like they were made of paper
and above 55 mph, the engine screamed so
loud, the sound was deafening!
