Odd squealing in 4th gear

I drove the GT yesterday on my errand run, and I was slightly perplexed:

Everything was fine until I was in 4th gear for about 1/4 mile ( 45 m.p.h. - level road). A squealing/shrieking sound suddenly started. It wasn't deafening, but it was loud. It stopped as soon as I shifted out of gear and did not return, despite attempts to duplicate the conditions.

Has anyone had this happen before? I initially thought it might be the heater fan or the wheel bearings. I switched the heater fan off as soon as the squealing started and I would have thought that wheel bearings would have caused a more persistent squeal.

If it were a wheel bearing, you probably would have lost the entire stub axle when it welded to the bearing. Brake pad vibrating maybe? Generator bushing need oil? (early cars only) Slipping fan belt? Water pump going bad?

If it's in the gearbox, I'd be concerned. Drain the fluid and inspect for metal powder. Also inspect the filter in the OD unit for metal.
