TR2/3/3A Odd Distributor Problem - TR-3

Putting the disy back in, I hit the same problem I encountered first in 1969 with this vehicle.

It appears that the distributor drive is 180 degrees out of time. When the distributor is installed so that it fully seats, the car does not run. When you rotate it 180 degrees, the drive partially engages, and it runs fine.

We ran it this way for many years. It was not until the recent rebuild that I had occassion to pull the distributor.

Any thoughts?

We did turn the crank back in the 60's, but I can't imagine not following the cam timing. Is there something else?

Dave, I think it's your lower driving gear that is 180 off, they are kind of funny getting the oil drive lined up with every thing else. Don't forget the shims (packing washer)under the Distributor pedestal. Wayne

Mine was off 180 degrees for many years... sure looked a lot neater once I got it turned around (the plug wires lay out much better that way).

You'll want to pull that lower drive gear and reinsert it in the correct orientation. You'll notice that it rotates a bit as it engages the gear on the camshaft... note how far it moves and allow for that on your second try. You'll eventually get the right spot. You may have to rearrange the wires in the cap... or maybe not since you said it was set-up with the dizzy partially engaged.
