Spitfire OD Switch on Shifter Knob, ala Spitfire?

Forgive me if I am displaying my ignorance as a newbie /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif, but... I like the switch location for the overdrive on the shifter knob like it is with the Spirfire.

Is it possible to have a switch on the shifter knob like this on a TR6, as opposed to the stalk? I have seen it mounted to the shifter (but not the knob switch), as well as under the dash, but I havnt seen a TR6 yet with the same OD switch as the Spitfire has.

Someone with a TR6 has a setup just like you have described and I've seen pictures of it posted here in the past. Stick around, I'm sure they'll show up.
 
I beleive that '76 TR6's had that set up from the factory. Which means it could be retrofitted to any earlier one if you really wanted to.
 
Slep - I think that this was a custom setup with a big black button right in the middle of the shifter knob. But then again, I've never seen a factory O/D in a 76, so maybe that's what it was for that year. I have a manual shift lever setup that I got from Alan in CA several months ago, but I'm afraid to show to you. I want everything else done first before I you kick me out of your shop.
 
Aldwyn, My black 6 had the spit switch and a disabled switch on the column. I took them both off and put in a the 2 speed rear switch on the side of the shifter that you saw.
You are welcome to the old switch if I can find it. Moral is, never throw anything away. Phil

Thanks, Phil! Hopefully, whatever TR I end up getting will have OD. If not, it'll be a year or two before I get the coin to replace the trans with an OD or 5 speed.

But either way, I'm going to try and get the switch into the shifter knob like the Spit. Unless it's a 5 speed, that is!

But who knows? Maybe I will find the stalk switch will be fine, and I wont want to change.

Time will tell!

The switch came from Radio Shack and the shift knob was an old aftermarket one I had floating around in the garage. It's the leather-covered type knob, which usually has a TR emblem or shift pattern inset into the top of it. Turns out these knobs are wood underneath (same manufacturer as the wooden ones, I'm sure, just covered in leather in this case). That makes it easy to carve up and work on with a Dremel. A hole drilled out the base of the knobe will take the wire down the shift lever, since it's not hollow (could cover it with shrink wrap, I suppose). The switch is simply a tight fit in the top of the knob, not glued in or anything. Once the car is back on the road, I'll let you know how it works! It was one of my cheaper and easier projects. The switch will be used in conjunction with one of Revington TR's "black box" overdrive controllers, which happens to *not* be one of my cheaper projects.

I though about chasing down a lever and knob from one of the other Triumphs that already has a similar arrangement. Maybe someday.

There are also widely available "universal" shift knobs with inset switches, that might be used. Some are okay, but I just didn't want a Hurst logo or neon-colored "Nitrous" label on there.

I think that a bright red "Nitrous" button would look great at the shows. It would surely attract attention and questions.

And yes, that was the exact picture that I was thinking of. See, I haven't lost it after all ..........well at least not yet.

I have a 76 OD that from the factory had the switch on the left side. I was going to convert to the Stag, Spitfire gear shift set up but now used to the switch on the left. Very handy from the steering wheel to shift up and down. Early F1 paddle system? I did convet my MGB OD to the gearshift system on the shifter and also handy. FYI actual shift knob hard to find but rest of stuff needed is available.
 
You make a good point there, rporter. It could be very handy, indeed. With it on the column, I may not have to take my right hand off my wife's leg to go in and out of OD. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I have a 69TR with OD. The first time I drove it( and a few times since) I thought I was turning on the turn signal and engaged the overdrive. I guess I,m just not used to the confined cockpit yet. I usually drive a Toyota Tundra. Pete
