Noticed the price on OBD II scanning devices are coming down in price and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to what manufacturer and model might work well for the weekend mechanic.
 
Mac tools offers a few nice ones. They'll even give you data lists. OTC is also a very reputable company.
Ebay often has some good deals on scantools

I'll talk to the Mac Tools guy next Thursday. Although the OTC 3407 or the 3494 AutoCode Scan Tool looks to be what I'm looking for. Decisions, decisions...
 
I bought a cheapie off the internet, seems to do everything I needed it to do. what I really need is a tester to reset the diagnostics on my classic rangie (odb1). Land Rover doesn't want to let the information out so that anyone with a laptop can do things like calibrate ride height, etc.
 
Under the passenger seat should be a LED readout for the Range. It will be the code reader for that vehicle. If it is not there, the plug is white and they are availbale used for $250.

I had the battery disconnected for several days waiting for an alternator rebuild and it didn't clear the codes (reminder this is a classic lwb so ODBI). Shop charged me 1.5 hours to clear codes and check them out. All because the alternator failed and I lost some kind of tach signal even though the ignition and lighting worked normally.
