does anyone know how to test an o/d tranny to see if it's good before installing it in the car. I'm wanting to purchase a used one from a local collector but i'd sure hate to install/uninstall if the unit is bad. my mgb is a 76 and the unit is out of a 79. any advice would be greatly appreciated. bob

It is easy to test the electrical function but a full dynamic test is more complicated. I have a test rig that does what you want but it is a set up I made for my business. You need a test bench, an electric motor drive and the drive belts and pulleys to simulate input RPMs of 1k to 3k RPM. The transmission is strapped onto the bench and connected to the drive motor via belt. A 12 volt power supply is then used to actuate the solenoid through the transmission interlocks. I also use an optic tachometer to detect overdrive function but you can also tell by sound. You must simulate the transmission spinning at operational speed in order to develop hydraulic pressure for dynamic operation. Hope this helps.

thanks for the info, i may have what's needed. once i get this mgb up to par, i've got two basket case healey 3000's to play with. this is such a great forum, i'm going to need lots of help
