Geo Hahn, Is there a possibility that the OD in your photo just happens to be a spare.... "Why yes, Tomster would you like it?......

Did the same, Geo. That nice warm light keeps me company on a long night trip home.
 
My A type OD slams in so hard it jolts the whole car. Next time I have the cover off I think I'll adjust it back about 1/16". I think that will slow it down a little. No problems going out.
I didn't like the big ugly OD switch so I changed mine fo a small rocker that lights up when engaged.
I only use it on the highway so I don't see it much.

3rd OD on an A-type is useful when doing twisty roads, especially in the mountains; as it gives you a shift at the flick of a switch. (Of course I much prefer the TR3 switch, as it's much less of a flick than a TR6 switch.)

2nd OD is even more useful for the same thing, as (at least in a TR3) it lets you keep both hands on the wheel coming out of those really tights turns (the ones marked at 15 mph and most fun around 40 /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif )

However, 2nd OD is also an almost perfect split between 2nd direct and 3rd direct, which you may have noticed is spread a bit more than the other gears. So just when the engine starts to run out of 'oomph' in 2nd direct, you flip the switch (full throttle, no clutch), the front end pops up, the engine drops right back onto it's power peak; and the guy that now behind you wonders where the afterburner is /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

The J-type experience is far different than the A : The A-type (especially the early ones on solid axle cars) shifts fast & hard like a racing transmission. The J-type is much slower to react. Since I also own two J-types, I would have to agree that 3rd OD is pretty much useless on a J. I only use it by accident on my Stags.
