A while back I replaced my non o/d trans in my 76B with one from a 77 with o/d. Installed the new wiring harness yesterday, had it on the rack with a friend running it up to speed in fourth and had him pull the wiper stalk aft while I had a test lite hooked into the o/d solenoid. Lite came on...but no o/d engaged. Tried everything...nothing. I even pulled the solenoid and checked it on the bench. Then I noticed I had no oil dripping from the solenoid cavity..even started the car and put it in gear...nothing..at any rpm?? I doubt thats normal...do I have a blockage or has my brain finally fried??

Did '76 & '77 use the switch in the gearshift knob?

Yes it did...but when I got the new harness I checked and my car is wired for the wiper stalk also...so I shot the wires Tony..and as I said in the post...everything works..the solenoid lites as soon as the stalk is pulled aft, but no oil at all comes out of the solenoid cavity with solenoid removed. I'm headed to the shop now and check it out. I may have to remove the drive train, again

Was the little ball on top of the solenoid? When i pulled the solenoid from my 72 to clean it i do not recall alot of oil coming out. Also be sure the solenoid is good. You have power there but may have a bad solenoid. Good luck! Bob

As for problems that can be repaired with the gearbox in place, the O/D oil pump is the first place to check. The shaft will stick in the housing especially if the gearbox has been sitting a while. If that is not the problem then check that the solenoid is holding the piston when power is applied. Both operations can be performed easily with the screen removed. (Just a bit messy)

As soon as I got to the shop yesterday I pulled the filter bolts, dropped the pump and the thing was not only not working but acted like it had cocked?? Got it out and cleaned and made a few minor mods...don't ask..and finally got the thing together and reserviced. Cranked it up, let it get warm and crossed my fingers. Still on the rack I went into fourth and speedo showed about 55..pulled the wiper stalk back and speed jumped to 70 with a small jerk...pushed it foward..clicked right out. Tested it about five times...perfect. Later in the day I tried it again...perfect. Now all thats left is paint the new trunk lid today and take it for a spin...
