O/D Gear Box Or Not

ONe trick that I learned after the job that would have saved some time:

The stock crossmember, which holds the trans mounts makes it hard to get to the bolts. Modify it by drilling a large hole one each side of the crossmember so that you can get a socket to the bolt.

I noticed that eBay has a "22 spline, J-Type Laycock" OD unit up for grabs atm... ( https://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/J-Type-Ov...sspagenameZWDVW ) from looking at the pics there appears to be a badly bent stud on the housing. person is asking 195 for a "buy it now" price auction is currently up to 102. Is this the type of OD unit we need for our 'Bs? I don't plan on bidding on this item, but something I'd like to know for future reference... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The MGB uses an LH type overdrive. I believe it was fitted from 1968 onwards, and that previously a type "D" was used.

Isn't J-type Volvo? I've heard of people using them with minor modification. Of course I oculd be remembering wrong. In fact, it's more likely than not. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

the seller is quoting it as a Volvo part, with possible secondary uses for MGBs and TR6s

Excellent how to, Maynard....& great photos....kudo's!

Hi
I finished swapping the 4 speed tranny to an O/D. I drive a lot of highway miles. I drove the freeway for the first time day before yesterday, I am so happy to have the 5th gear (so to speak) it was worth every penny. I would say do the swap. I can drive the freeway now and not keep one eye constantly in the rear view to see who is going to be the next person to run over me. I was passing others, what a concept!
