Hey all,
Went to check my rear brakes and the nuts that hold the splined hub onto the brake drum are "frozen" and will not release. I do not want to end up rounding them off by forcing the socket so should I heat them up to see if that will unfreeze them ? Or any other suggestions will be welcomed.

A breaker bar would be the thing to use but can you get a proper Hex socket to go with it, so that you reduce the risk of cheesing (rounding off) the nuts.

Hey Bob and Rick,
I ordered some new nuts from Moss as the old ones were already "cheesing" as Bob aptly put it. Will apply a little heat with a breaker bar and should be good to go.

Hey y'all,
Well, got all the nuts off but one and it is rounded out or cheesed as Bob from UK mentioned. Have tried loosening spray and heat from a propane torch but it will not budge. Probably was put on with an impact wrench as all the others required a breaker bar to get off. Now what can I do ? It was already rounded off and now it's really rounded off ! All I was going to be doing was checking my rear brake lining so nothing major like an oil seal or such. HELP !!!!

I would be interested to know how these sockets work? No stuck nuts at the moment but we all get them at some time (must be age :blush: ). Do you need to hammer them on?

I used this method a couple hours ago, to remove an O2 sensor (blank) plug in the exhaust system of my 99.

I'm planning on putting a supercharger back on, and want to be able to check with a wideband O2 analyzer.

Straight transmission fluid is supposed to be a good for pentration. If all else fails use a nut splitter to remove the nut.

Mike, if the fancy nut remover things won't get it then a sharp cold chisel and bfh will. I got quite a few of mine off this way, as did the previous person who just put them back on afterwards.

Get a cut started by beating the chisel straight in towards the centre then turn the chisel and bash it in the undoing direction. Once you have three or four good cuts going around the nut it will loosen.

Have a look at your socket, it probably has a chamfer inside the hex so that the hex doesn't grip on the last 0.040" or so and increases the chances of rounding the flats. Put the socket on the grinder to remove the chamfer, then you have far less chance of damaging the new nuts.

Hey y'all,
Thanks for the additional suggestions on how to remove the stuck nut. Think I will wait until I get the special socket set from Sears as recommended by Rick and then have all the other items lined up to work on the bloody thing. Particularly like the bfh idea from our Kiwi friend Andy. Even if I don't need it, will be nice to have handy to beat on something to take out the frustrations!

Hey Rick and all,
Rick, you the man !!!! The Craftsman nut cruncher worked perfect. Tried the cold chisel first but that wasn't doing much but chewing the nut up more even with a bfh but UPS came and saved the day with the Craftsman set. Took the second largest size and basically hammered it on with a tight fit and fortunately a 1 inch socket fit so with a breaker bar got it to break the seal on the stud. Of course now I have to get the new tool off of the old nut but believe I just try to reverse the nut buster to release it. Hey, worst case I have one less size to use for future stuck nuts but my stud for the splined hub is still good. Went through all of this to check the brake linings and of course they are fine, maybe 2/3 left. But now I will have brand new nuts on and will not use an impact wrench. Going to see if there is a torque setting in the manual. If not, anyone have a suggested torque setting ?

ps- just reversed the direction on the nut buster and came right off

Shop manual says 720-750 in. lbs. or 60-65 ft. lbs. for wheel nuts for pressed steel wheels. I'd use that for the hub nuts since they are about the same as the wheel nuts.
