Numbering of cylinders

Do the cylinders number 1 to 6 from the firewall or from the radiator? No doubt valves follow the same logic. The reason Im asking is that Im adjusting the valves using the Haynes manual and they give a numbering sequence.

Regardless of the vehicle, #1 cylinder is generally considered to be at the "front" of the engine where the pulleys are. You are correct, valves also start their numbering at the pulley end of the engine.
 
There is no absolute rule. Jaguar numbers it's cylinders from the firewall forward on their in-line engines.

I've never worked on a Jaguar, however, every other car (American, Japanese, German, or British) that I've worked on starts with #1 at the pulley end. Curious indeed.

Since A-H is a BMC vehicle am I correct in assuming it follows the numbering sequence used on the 4-cylinder A-series engines with #1 at the "front"?

OK Keoke, I suppose you're right. I'm more familiar with MGs, Triumphs, and A-series cars. I assumed a Healey being a BMC car would also start its cylinder numbering at the front... and I did say "generally".

So, what is the answer to DerekJ's question then?
