Well, I did it! I just agreed to buy what turns out to be a (mostly) 1974 MG Midget. The engine actually runs, and sounded pretty good. I'll be finishing up the deal on Tuesday. Comes with a bunch of parts, and the body tub actually doesn't look too bad. Probably would need the front floors done, but the rest of the shell seems pretty clean. Don't know all that is included yet. May be a title as well--car was put together a few years ago from a couple of cars, so not sure if the title actually matches the VIN on the car. I'm buying it for parts, so I don't really care.

Paid $900, and the seller is loaning me his trailer to get it home. May not even need to do a rebuild right now on the engine, we'll see. Heard it run, and it sounded pretty good, no really nasty noises. Will need to do the carbs for sure.

I'm excited, never had a parts car before. Goal is to tear it down soon and pull the bits I need. I'd like to be rid of the shell before winter really sets in, late November at the latest. Once I figure out what I actually have, I'll let y'all know. If there are Midget parts you need, I just might have some.

I just did the same thing yesterday.
I bid on a a local ratty '72 (RWA) in Craig's List four weeks ago and never got a response.
Yesterday, they called and wanted it gone quickly.
This car will donate it's 1275 engine to my race car.
 
Drew, that shell is in extremely good shape, don't rush to sell it, that is a gem. In fact, are you sure you even want to sell it? Does Tunebug need a younger sister?
You want to work out a deal with that Tonneau?

$900... You can recover a bunch of that by ebaying some parts. If the bonnet doesn't have a bunch of rust and bondo it will bring a good price.
 
Just looking at the pictures of the engine, and I noticed that the vacuum advance hose is not running to the distributor. If the other end of it was not plugged, it could have been causing the engine to run lean/rough.
 
Wow, what a great starter restoration that would have been for someone.

I want the trailer.
 
I'll know later on today what other parts come with it (picture above is from the seller's website, taken a few months ago, the close-ups on my site are from my inspection yesterday). I'll certainly have some screaming deals on parts in the near future.

I couldn't really tell what condition the front suspension was in. I'll be spending some time tomorrow night going through it carefully and making some initial plans for what I want to keep. I've been tempted to keep the shell for possible use in the future, but in all reality I can't afford to run 2 cars, and I've got nowhere to keep it. Hopefully it will go on to someone who needs a good shell for a rusting car.
 
I'd like that trailer as well, Jack. The seller races Spitfires, and had it built just for them. A nice, light weight LBC hauler.
 
looks like an easy rebuild, more than a parts car....i wouldnt part it.....for what you could get for ur bugeye you could build a very nice midget! .....z

I don't feel too bad about parting it out -- it is built from a couple of cars already. I did think at one point (very briefly) about rebuilding it, but I'm not really interested in a restoration at this point, and I just really like my Bugeye. The tub will make someone else's restoration go easier, so everybody wins.
 
i guess if its stripped completely itll be better in the end after a full rebuild...u gotta good deal...nice motor.....z
