Master cylinder in my Mercedes 380SL appears to be bad so I wnet down to Advance Auto...$50. That's the first inexpensive thing I've ever found on that car.
There must be something wrong Tony, are you sure it wasn't $250 and they just rang it up wrong? Either that or they screwed up and gave you the MC for a 92 Ford Escort.
Seriously, thats pretty dang cheap regardless of what type car. Wonder why.
Interestingly, I once brought my '91 Lebaron convertible in to have the rear window motor fixed at an auto electric place...they happened to specialize in Mercedes and BMWs.
Turns out the $150 window motor for the Lebaron was the same as the $350 motor for the Mercedes. Same motor, almost identical casing -- just a slight different angle to the plug-in, but either would work in either car.
Turns out there are a lot of parts that are cheaper if you know which alternate part numbers will work.
These days though... Most parts have been cross-referenced by the suppliers and the price based on rarity, and sometimes whichever car uses that part is most expensive. Or if it's used by way too many cars... It's averaged.
Well, we'll know by the end of the day....it looks just like the one we just took off (which was original w/Mercedes tri-star) - except it doesn't have the tri-star
&, I've used Advance parts for a long time...heck, over the past 10 years, I've gotten 5 or 6 new sets of spark plug wires for my S-10 - free!
Well, figured it out! The parts delivery gal brought some brake fluid & other things I needed to the garage just now & picked up my old cylinder for core...I sked her about the brake master cylinder cost....she informed me that they had changed my status to a commercial account...the cylinder retails for $120 - its on the receipt she left when she picked up the core!! Man, I like this....they've always delivered to me if I coudn't run down to the store...& they always keep a record of what I buy...so, I guess somebody decided I'm a commercial activity!
Jim...in a way, that's kinda funny...but I have guys from California who order parts from me all the time for the discount & to save California sales tax...Moss ships them to me from New Jersey (or, sometimes, California) & I ship them to California & they're still less expensive than if the guys bought them direct from Moss!
Now, for an extra $6 per hundred, I can get Moss to drop ship directly from the factory!
