Now I know that the four bolts in the cockpit related to the springs do. Nothing really, just more support for the spring hanger that is welded in.

What happend is I got the two bolts on the U hanger around the spring off, then promptly broke the two front bolts, now that should not be a prob you would think but they stick out just enough that the spring while loose now will not come out. There is just not quite enough room.

Thinking.............

Maybe I can disassemble the spring in place from the bottom up. Will have to cut the spring plates off of the spring. If I can get the darn thing out I am home free.

Jack:

I had refered to taking off the bottom plates, so that you can get it real clean in there, I always see some rust dust in mine when I remove the springs.

I believe that the original springs had a bolt going thru them with a nut on the top so that taking them apart maybe difficult. If you pull\bang the ubolts out. then pull the spring back and and lift the back of it, it might clear with the tab on the top still in place. Mine due, but I have one leaf removed.

Patrick

Yep, think one leaf would do the trick.

They are paveing the road in front of my house and I need a new cut off blade for drill, sigh. guess it will have to wait till tomorrow.

Wouldn't you know it, the last two bolts on the car broke off. Gona need new rear springs for sure. I see that the standard 15 leaf ones are not available so guess I must go with a 10 leaf rally spring.

Well unless I can find an old spring. Maybe on ebay.

I will get it out if I have to melt it out.

I had just put the rally springs in mine, and was told that they were a bit stiffer, so I took out one leaf. Still waiting to engine back together, so I can't tell you how it sits with them.

On the lighter side I spoke with the machine shop yesterday and he is halfway thru my work, probably in the next two weeks I should be getting my shiny engine parts back and getting to work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

BTW that reminds me of a flywheel question I need to post.

Well that did not work. Seems there is a bolt at the fat end through all the leaves. Sigh.

Only thing I can think of at this point is cut a hole up through the bottom of the spring box base plate so I can get to the bolt, then maybe I can get the bottom leaf or two off so there will be room to remove the rest.

GB1, guys. I have the bolts out. Total of eight I think, including the four that go into the cockpit.

Now what, how does that plate come off? God knows I need to remove it if at all possible.

Jack,

Have you pulled the threaded plate off of the top of the springs? Once that is out of the cavity theres enough room to remove the springs.

I did'nt have to disassemble mine to get them out.

Go try it and let us know!!!

Ben

What happened is that the two bolts that go to the threaded plate broke off so they stick up and down both.

There is no way to get the threaded plate out with out removeing the remaining part of the bolts and no way to get to them.

Does the plate on the bottome of the car, the spring box base plate, come off. There are no bolts in in now?

Intresting part is that there are four bolts on the front of the plate that go up into the cockpit. Took them out and nothing happened. Don't really see any welds. ??????

Of course what I need is a real IPB. But don't supose anyone ever made one.

The drawing in the VB catalog on page 37 seems to be the best I can find. In fact see no reason or place to weld if I wanted??

Where are they welded, if they are?

Tomorrow I will raise car higher and get under there with a creaper and a wire wheel. It just seems to me they should come off looking at the design.

I looked at the parts diagram in the MOSS catalog and they appear to be spot welded together with the exception of the lower spring plate reinforcment. The part should come off but there will be another piece of metal in the way under it.

Yea but that is rust, not a problem I think. The sheet metal I mean.

I do note that sawzalls blades come in lengths up to 12 inchs so that is a strong posability Ben. Think I will check the rental place tomorrow. This is really getting to me.

Jack,
The reinforcement plate is spot welded to the floor pan, and then there is the spring hanger box. Can you drill the bolts out enough to clear the spring hanger? I know it is a pita to do, but try the bullet point drill bits by Dewalt / B&D, sometimes they work better.

I just don't know Chris but I've got to try something and I'll be able to tell tomorrow for sure. May have to go to Home Depot and get some special bits but will try a standard or two first and see how it goes.

I really thing my only chance at this is to drill after Rogers comment, and now yours as well. Course I have been think about drilling for an hour or so as well.

Anyway, all ideas welcome, we will see.

Bullet point bits, new one for me, will check on those.
