We bought my son a Fiero for his first car. If you get the 4cly then it is not a sports car and the rate is fairly low. I couldn't get in and out comfortably or we would still have it. Another advantage is that only two people can fit so no horsing around with a bunch of guys in the car and the seats do not recline enough for the other kind of trouble. Very cool car.

I've owned 87 and 88 Fieros and the 88 is superior - the new suspension was a real move forward.
I have also driven an Indy - 4 cylinder. I know why they call that engine the Iron Puke ('duke')
It was this engine that gave the Fiero a reputation for catching on fire. Picture this - a standing fit oil filter without anti-drain down valve coupled with an engine management system that shoots the RPM to about 2500 the instant the thing fires. Perfect formula for having the bottom end trash itself and in some cases get set on fire when the hot oil from the bursting crankcase hits the exhaust system.
So dumb it could have been done by a British car company! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Seriously though, they do make a nice basis for kit cars. And with a decent engine upgrade would be fun to drive!

I noticed when the early ones came out,they were all in the dealership at one time or another with major engine problems.
A friend of mine worked for Huffaker Racing.
They raced the 4cylinder cars in GTU.
He told me they had problems with the engines.When they
finally sorted that out,then they had problems with the transmissions.
The last year GT's were decent cars,though.
I read an article in Autoweek a few years ago where they
noted that the car was doomed from the beginning.
Seems that the accountants put really big cost stipulations on building the car,so it ended up being a "parts bin" car.
It seems they used some X-car parts,etc.
Gm seems to finally get a car right (Fiero Gt,Impala SS),then they discontinue it.

Most of the car (aside from the stamped steel spaceframe) was X-parts from the bin, in the first few years. Yeah, I've been a passenger in both the good one (1988 GT), and the bad one's (1984-1987). You can feel the difference even riding in the passenger seat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Like I said before. 1988 GT would be about the only one I'd want... But the 1984 base model might be collectible one day too - just because - first year and all - and the losses due to fire.
Plus, alot of them have been junked/totaled. In every year!
I'd bet that in another 15 years or so, the 88 GT will be worth some money - but about the same as our cars, a bunch were made, and a bunch were modified. I can't wait to see them start showing up on Barrett Jackson.
I might even make one my American sportscar (for my takeover) - hehehehehehe
