I have stumbled across a 69 VW bug for sale.. its in really really good shape, and is mostly original. Its a daily driver for the guy selling it. The only reason he is selling it is because he got an older one.

Here is the kicker he is selling it for $500.

I was thinking about getting it to take some of the strain off the GT6.

Thoughts?

Really good shape? $500? Doesn't add up.

Well I thought the same thing at first. So I have been all over it, it looks great.. he told me he for it for $500 he had to rebuild the motor. then he drove it everyday back and forth to school, replacing and rebuilding it when things needed to be worked on.. but he said "I just don't have room for it anymore" as he opens his garage and there are 3 vintage BMW motorcycles , one of witch is pre WW2. a 64 VW bug convertible and a growing collection of stoplights and road signs.

So I dont think he is out to rip me off... he just doesn't have room for it.

Seems like you can't really go wrong for that price, especially if it's running. I say go for it, but Triumph and Volkswagen owners don't really have a reputation for showing restraint when it comes to wanting new toys.

I'll send you the $500 on Thursday!

I'm a born and raised VW enthusiast and it sounds fishy to me.
You'd be crazy to sell any bug in decent shape for 500.
Bugs suck in the winter too so unless you have a winter car get something else.
I gues you'll never really know unless you go take it out for a spin.

I took it for a spin today... and needless to say. I just need to pay him for it. It is a really solid car. No rust except some light rust on the chrome and the muffler had a rust hole in it so you could really hear me coming down the road.

I learned how to drive my GT6 in the snow this winter.. its not bad at all, so I don't think the Bug would be that much worse. I may do it the same way I did the GT6, a second set of wheels with dedicated snow tires on them.

Bugs have horrible heaters

I disagree. While it's not technically a bug, my old notchback had the best heater I've ever had in a non-modern car. It pumped out so much heat I used the sunroof as the thermostat.

As I recall, Type 3s in general had rather better heaters...unless your Beetle had one of the optional gas heaters! Otherwise, back in my late 1960s high school days, I had several friends with Beetles. They all got pretty good at scraping the inside of the windshield constantly in winter (especially my one friend with his tired '57 oval-window Beetle)!

Otherwise, they always seemed pretty good in the snow. Although....my only ever (thus far, knock on wood) injury in a car crash came as a passenger in another friend's Beetle. Snowy day, curvy road, and someone in a Mustang came at us on our side of the road. My friend had little choice but to swerve right. The RR wheel caught a culvert pipe, the car spun and then landed on the passenger side in the ditch. I'd have been fine had I not thoughtlessly tried to brace myself...on the doorglass, which was the only piece of glass that broke. Still have scars on my pinky finger from that....

I always found VWs to do well in the snow. Front engined front wheel drive or rear engined rear wheel drive with a good set of tires always seemed to maintain decent traction in even the snowiest conditions. I think temperature is what is being referred to here, since the inside of air-cooled vws always seems to be about the same as the outside. I had a '77 scirocco, however, that had the best heater on the planet. I'm still looking to get a Mk1 scirocco. One of the funnest cars i've ever driven.

Where were you living?

Howdy Will,

You have a PM from me.

Thanx, Russ

Grab it!!!
My father has a 70 German (Euro model) bug. Overall I think my herald is better in some ways (more powerful, more accurate steering and better brakes) but the bug has been much more reliable! Of course my herald was a real basket case when I got it.

My sister had a mid-70s VW convertible in decent shape in the early 80s and its heater was pretty weak. I thought that if that was the case then the heat exchangers probably needed replacing.

Type 3s rule!! Tried getting a 67 fastback but the guy didn't have the title. Thats how i ended up with my GT6.
Mk1 and Mk2 Scirocco are awesomebecause they are the same as the Rabbit/ Golf. The Mk1 Golf is the best car Volkswagen has even made no questions asked.

well it mine now, i am having a it stored at a friends for now.. in a few weeks ill be doing some photo shoots.
