I didn't look that closely but it might be alternate storage, poss. spare tire, golf clubs, AR?
 
If you look at the one Mickey posted it is the same - so I don't think it was ever planned

Walter, I saw one of those conversions where they left the lower part of the rear door still operational to use as a storage compartment.
