Noreaster-- it's snowing like crazy

Actually rained here a couple times last week. Raining in Santa Monica doesn't raise the water table unfortunately.

Nial - question for you. We're having heavy snow and gusty winds, so being outside isn't exactly fun.

Are you doing your snow blowing despite the continuing snow and wind?

Thanks.
Tom

Yeah, I got bombed with flying snow depending on which directions I was snow-blowing. At one point, my black jacket looked white. The wind hasn't been real bad here but it's more than normal. My jacket, gloves, hat and pants were soaking wet when I came in.

I'm all done now. Over 300' of sidewalk (most of it was about 16" deep), plus my driveway and walkways. And the "outside" cars had to be cleaned off too (I need a stepladder to clear the roof of the van).
All my neighbors were out doing the same thing so we were commiserating with each other. My neighbor's kid got his car stuck and it took a few of us to push him free.

Shoveling and clearing snow is mindless work, but actually, I sort of like it.

We were supposed to be just west of this storm. Currently we are 6 inches deep into it.....

It's been raining here off & on for the last few days.
Fortunatly,we need it,as we were at 27% of normal before
it started.

Spoke with my grandson in Burlington, NJ day before yesterday and he said they have about 8 inches now and their predicting another 12 inches. So many people without power. Mother nature can be cruel at times. :nightmare: PJ

State Fair over this past week, the "tradition" is a week of off-and-on rain and humid, chilly low temps. Tradition has been maintained. *drat*

We'll see more pleasant weather going forward, though. You poor guys "up there" are in our thoughts. I remember all too well what that "winter" stuff is to contend with.

'sposed to see mid-70's today as a high temp.

7:45am EST. Highways here are a mess. Miles of cars stuck on ice; many stranded at the side. Over 1700 accidents in the last 24 hours. Total snow here was about 18", with ice on top. We'll get a few hours clear this afternoon, but we expect another 6 to 10 inches overnight and into tomorrow. You should see the DOT highway cams - I-95, I-84, I-91, I-384, I-291, even the Merritt Parkway - they're just icy parking lots all over Connecticut.

Someone please put the Polar Vortex back in place!
Tom

I'd expect that down in SC and GA but to a lesser extent in New England. Did everyone forget how to drive in those conditions?

The winter of '78 was my "final straw" in western PA, nasty storms but expected to report for work, regardless.

The 1-2" we were to get yesterday turned into an easy 6" of white stuff. I managed to get the 30 miles home covered only 13 minutes off advertised. Went out to mom and dad's (about 4 miles away) and plowed them out in exchange for supper before going back home. Had about 8" of snow in the drive with a nearly 20" furrow of snow from the plow truck at the end. At midnight mom called asking if I could come back out to give my youngest brother's friends a ride home. My Impala was the only vehicle that would move in the snow I guess. Driving in snow is fun but I'm about ready for it to be over with... Round 2 of this stuff is called for today and tomorrow.

My daughter plus son-in-law and kids live in that area. We always go down to watch kids on Friday....but not today. Roads are too icy down there.
Daughter just told me there a big pile up accident on the PA Turnpike and it's causing a problem in their area.

I was in college then. After the blizzards went through I went to start the car and all it would do was spin the starter without engaging. When I opened the I found it had blown and packed snow up underneath until all you could see was top of the carburetor and a print of the inside of the hood in the snow. Took a weekend of cleaning it out and heat to get it running.

Yep, huge blizzard in the midwest. I was in the only state university that did not shut down for it, the theory then was most students lived on campus so how hard could it be to walk between buildings, with snow measured in feet...

It wasn't just the midwest -

We called it the Blizzard of '78. Massive snow fall and gales, plus hurricane force winds along the coast.

Believe me - neither do we ...

I guess we lucked out (again). About 10 inches of snow, not too much rain and sleet. Today is calm and about 40 degrees so snow removal wasn't too bad. I saw some kids sliding on a nearby hill - all toboggans and the like since it's pretty deep for sleds. One older fellow had his sled (snowmobile) with a long rope trailing and was hauling the others up hill.
