noise underneath the car

i took my '60 BT7 out for a ride and i notice a wood sounding clunk underneath the car when i go over a bump. any ideas before i start searching?

So what's new? How long have you had your Healey? Have you checked that the rear shock bolts are tight?

Both times (10 years apart) I have heard and felt a clunk while going over bumps in my BJ8, the cause was loose left rear shock attach bolts.

Thank you, Rick -
Your card from Donald Healey inspired me!

Aside from the above post...check your boot for loose items! I had the same kind of sound coming from my Healey last summer and found it to be some items where wedged in between the passenger seat, making the seat back bounce back and forth. I was almost certain it was coming from under my car!

Just had the very same problem. Turned out the rear shock mounting "ear" had broken off. All the tightening of the bolts only helped for a while. Was difficult to find until I realized I shouldn't have to keep tightening the bolts then I saw the broken ear. BTW worldwide does a great job rebuilding shocks, bot they wouldn't take mine as a core due to the ear broken off. Lesson, make sure the shock and link are aligned properly when installing.

The noise turned out to be the convertible top posts that slide into the holes behind the seats. The poles are sliding up and down and hitting the bottom as I go over bumps. Obviously I wasn't experiencing the noise when the top wasn't up.

I took the car for a ride today after I put some pads in the bottom of the holes for the convertible top, I am still hearing the noise when going over bumps. The shocks are tight. I emptied the trunk. Any other ideas?

several of you mentioned that it could be the shocks. i got under the car to make sure the bolt for the shocks were tightened. is there something else to look for on the shocks?

Yes...leakage...... But getting back to the sound you are hearing, pulling on the shocks are not enough! Get your socket wrench on the bolts and see if they are really tight! Check for any bare spots where something is rubbing against under the car. Is your gas tank tight.... Check those hold down straps with the fuel tank near empty. And you can check the leaf springs and mounts as well!

I'll be ****ed. I just rocked the passenger seat and it sure sounds like the noise I have been hearing. Any suggestions on how to keep the passenger seat from jumping up and down(the base of the seat)?

I don't mean to say I told you so....but I told you so! LOL.... Same thing happened to me! Except I had some items stuck in between the seat back and the seat bottom which made the seat back bounce around when I hit any small bump. What item did you remove from your passenger seat? Lol....
