TR4/4A Noise from the Rear--IRS

I'm experiencing two annoying sounds I can't pinpoint. One actually did start after I bumped the mufflers on the underside--speed bumps. I was getting horrible rattling sounds after that, for about 20 minutes, and that went away. Well, after a week, that came back yesterday. Sounds like a tin can wobbling around inside a larger garbage can. Do things come apart inside the muffler? I don't see the tailpipes hitting or touching anything. The tailpipe shaft that snugs into the front header pipe is a bit loose.

On top of that, I'm getting a humming sound at about 2300 rpm's in fourth gear.

My hope is that both sounds are related, but getting under the car showed nothing obvious.

Can anyone suggest where I'd best check? It's an IRS with CV axles from Goodparts.

OK, I think I've found the noise and could use some advice.

The noise occurs all the time, moving or not, in gear or not. It's coming from the left rear muffler. The stainless steel cover is "accordion-ing," or "fluttering" as my muffler guy said might be the case. He said they looked so good he doubted that would be the case, but, in fact, it is. I can hear the noise and see the steel fluttering. I can stop most of the sound by holding a rag tight to the body of the muffler.

I'm hoping that's the problem. I was also noticing a very disturbing "hum" from the rear at 2300 rpms in 4th gear, and I'm hoping it's all related. If not, I'll be on to the next mystery.


Now, in checking the manuals, I see that I have two rear mufflers but no front muffler. I have two Y pipes, two rear mufflers, but no front. I've always felt this car was a bit too noisy.

Should I install a front muffler as well as a new rear one? To do so I may need to order a new, shorter, front Y pipe and do some horsing around. But I could do it--eventually.

Originally, the TR4A's with the 2 rear mufflers did have a front muffler as well. Like your car, I used a TR6 front Y-pipe which perfectly replaces the front muffler. I never thought mine was too loud at the time with the rear Ansa mufflers though.

That sounds more sensible. I'll leave mine AS IS without monkeying around with that front Y pipe. I'll order a new muffler and head on down the road.
