Fixed!, and here's how:
"There are several errors in the diagram you referenced, AND the Jaguar
Parts Catalogue for the 89 model is also WRONG in that it reverses the
position of the bearing spacer and adjustable spacer. The way the hub
is made, "necked-down" with a smaller diameter on the inboard end, you
MUST put the large spacer on first, with the small end inboard, and
then put the thin "adjustable spacer" on inboard of the large spacer.
The function of the two spacers is to provide the proper space between
the inner and outer bearings, and the thin "adjustable" spacer (which
is available in different thicknesses) provides the proper end float of
the bearings. If you didn't replace a hub carrier (just the bearings),
then you can use the same spacers, as long as you assemble them the
correct way.
So to make sure the above is clear, the following is the way the
diagram you linked SHOULD read:
(1) The component labeled 1-26 is the bearing spacer, NOT the
adjustable spacer, and it should be assembled on the hub shaft, large
end first, or large end on the outboard side.
(2) The component labeled 27,28 on your diagram is the "adjustable
spacer" which is available in different sizes. That small spacer is
assembled on the hub shaft AFTER the large spacer, fits against the
SMALL end of the large spacer, and is followed by the Inner Bearing.
Thus the two spacers set the distance between the two bearings.
If this isn't clear, please post back, as it is IMPERATIVE that this be
assembled correctly.
