Well in this case it was Ry Cooder and a band he cobbed together in the '90s. "Little Village" by name. One "album". But some great songs.

Doc- the only thing that came to my mind was the Tubes and I know all those lyrics and i knew it wasn't that.
 
I have heard only a recording of Blind Alfred Reed and The West Virginia Night Owls do How can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?. Didn't know anyone else ever recorded it!
