I think my favorite pastime driving the Sprite is seeing a road and thinking "Hey, where does this go?" or looking at a map and thinking "I've never driven that road, let's go there." I picked a couple of good ones today poking around southwest Frederick County with my daughter riding shotgun as usual: Flint Hill Road, a nice little winding road near Sugarloaf Mountain, and then Baker Valley Road, a very scenic road which brought me unexpectedly into the Monocacy Battlefield Park, and then we took an old alignment of Route 355 back toward Urbana to head home by way of another windy little road.

The Battle of Monocacy was relatively minor Civil War Battle in July 1864 It was a delaying action to prevent Confederate Troops under Jubal Early from reaching Washington, D.C. The Confederates won the actual battle, but it delayed their advance long enough for the Union to send reinforcements in the form of VII Corps to Washington to repulse the attack. Over the last 10 to 20 years, the NPS has really done quite a bit to restore and improve the Battlefield.
