Funny how that works. The "Wonder Bread" stuff seems impervious to mold, seems to have the half-life of plutonium. While the better "fresh baked" breads go off in a few days. This loaf was four days old and sliced. From Publix.
 
We are lucky to have a really food Italian bakery minutes away. Great fresh-baked corn rye, seeded rye, baguettes, donuts, usual cannolis and Italian pastry. Sad to say, most Americans have never tasted good bread unless they've traveled. This is the last bakery left in town. Seems no one wants to get up at 4 am, turn on the ovens and start baking.
 
I make my own bread and friends have said "You should sell that bread" It is true that most people in the US have not had good bread.

I tell them it would cost so much nobody would buy it.

I make a lot of bread. Some of it is better than others but most are better than what comes from the store.
 
I should start baking my Italian grandma's bread recipe. As the weather cools down, the oven should get more use. I'd love to have David's setup!

We do Cracker Barrel on the road normally Best Western near by. Gift shop a killer also. One stop in New Mexico the traveling college football team was there what a zoo that was, They did call ahead we were told I think they empty the kitchen of all the food. still a safe place to eat. Madflyer

I think you would wear more of that one than you would eat.
 
I figure if I balance that "Battle Royale" burger with enough cold CAB, the energy my body uses to heat the cold beer will equal the energy of the burger.

Right? Right?
 
I have not ate McPukes or Bugger King, or any fast food place in years, save for Chick fil-et. Great food and great customer service.

When we are traveling, we usually stop and privately owned restaurants.

IDK. For chains, In-and-Out, with their excellent burgers and "combo" plates, is consistently good. Second choice: Fuddruckers.
 
Their fries are the only thing I even consider.
 
I haven't set foot inside a McDonalds in 20-25 years. To be fair, I don't go to any of the fast food chains.

Here in Toronto they have just stopped indoor dining for the second time. Over the summer we chose not to eat on patios and right now it is 44 deg so I wouldn't want to anyway. Thus most of our meals have been home cooked, Prior to COVID we ate out too much and not always healthy as often we were on the road. (In other news I have lost 20 lbs since March just from eating better food :rolleyes: ) However, we have had takeout/delivery regularly and have computed that part of the reason burgers/ pizzas/ chinese etc is so popular as fast food is because it is so much easier to transport/ keep warm than choices like Italian or pub grub.

We are pretty much off fries completely but, yes there is an addictive quality to McD's fries - the reason BTW is because in the factory they briefly par boil them before freezing so, when cooked in the fryer they are crisp and salty on the outside but soft and melty on the inside. All of which brings me to a recipe I recently discovered for roasted potatoes. Once the potatoes are cut, soak them in the hottest water you can for about ten minutes and then throw them in the oven. They will then have started to cook inside but will crisp up on the outside, and Voila! OK not exactly McD's but it really did make a difference.
