No more Goats!

I didn’t have a problem with the new GTO other than to say it didn’t really seem to have the same charm & presence of the original.

Here is a link to the Hemmings Classic car eWeekly report. GM says no more GTOs

The problem wasn't the nameplate or the engine, but the fact that they chose to re-badge a Vauxhall with ho-hum, last-decade styling. If they had done some retro styling and made it look like a 60's-70's GTO. They would've been selling like hotcakes. That's the main complaint I've read from the GTO guys. Same complaint from the dodge charger guys too.

On that note... I'd recon this years model will probably sell out quickly now though. It at least has the hood scoops, and now it's destined as a limited production car.

Funny how they say that they’re taking it off the shelf “for now”. The implication being that something else might come out down the road. IMHO There is always room for another two door RWD coupe in this segment. But I feel it was lacking even before the Goat that was somewhat pricy and suspect it lost some customers to the more affordable new Mustang.

Styling didn’t really bother me that much as I owned a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that had similar lines just in a four door package & I actually liked its styling better than some of the current styling cues.

Not only pricy to buy, but pricy to own. Imagine having a "family sedan" with 400 HP and paying $3.00 a gallon for premium unleaded. Same great timing that killed GM's 454/455HO engines in 1973-74.

[/ QUOTE ] Not saying I disagree with you but if fuel prices where the cause of the GTO's demise wouldn't you think it'd have the same affect on other vehicles? I mean while sales have slumped a bit SUVs & Trucks are still money makers and most of the full-sized variants got about the same gas mileage or less as the Goat does (err?) I mean did.

As for the 454’s demise? I was still in Kalifornia when that state was the first to actually ban that motor. But besides showing our vulnerability to foreign oil & giving a boost to Japanese automakers with their cheap econo boxes. The OPEC induced oil shortage of the early 70’s gave a huge shoot in the arm to the Greenie movement. They formed ranks (politically speaking) and made insane cubic displacement a offensive cliché.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t blame the tree huggers for everything. I still hold the American automakers culpable for their short sightedness & snubbed their noses at economy car development.
