A couple of weeks ago I told ya'll we had purchased a 1976 280Z for young son....he has diligently been out in the garage with his Dad for the past three weeks, killing the ant colonies that had taken up residence under the carpeting, cleaning out rat nests, changing the plugs, fluids, lines etc. The gas tank was full of varnish that had actually hardened in the lines, so they dropped it, boiled it out and actualy cleared to carmelized crud out.
This car was parked in the DPO's side yard in 1988 and has not moved or been started since. Considering this, the rust is minimal just lots of creepies and critters to evict. Young son has been working on this.
Today, they got it started. I'm so angry I didn't grab the camera to get a picture of that expression...IT RUNS! Strong, no knocks and it sounds good!
There is still A LOT of work to do, but this moment was priceless!

Congratulations on getting it going but close all of the windows and throw in a flea bomb and leave it overnight. Won't be much living in the car in the morning.

Bill,
We set off one in the car on the trailer ride home because we were concerned about dropping it in the garage with who knows what in it. It did kill most of the problems (I did a second once it was off the trailer in the garage) but those suckers must be immune or something. We have pulled the seats, carpets, panels, even the hub caps had them nesting in there. Its getting better but I'm amazed at where we are finding rats' nests and ant hills!
 
make sure you clean out the heater vents before you turn the blower on as you don't want to breathe any of whatever is in there as mice love heaters
 
ooh good call! I hadn't considered those yet! The dash is completely gone and I'm debating on a cover rather that a replacement.
Either way, I think the best course is to pull the dash to make sure there's no surprises behind it.
I just don't do all these little creepy crawlies well! If I could find a biohazard suit to wear I would. I'm glad young son is willing to do it! I just stand back a short distance and point to what needs to be removed. I tell him its important that he do this, good learning experience!
