No Heat

Ok, it finally got cold here. Lows in the upper 30's. Finally got around to checking "Molly's" heater and lo and behold no heat. Seems to be plenty of coolant in the system so what is the next item to look at? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Is the heater valve opening?

Seems to be. The cable is in one piece. I'll try to look at the valve and see to make sure its moving. Could the valve its self be stopped up?

Usually is...but there's a tech tip on my web site for cleaning it.

Check cable operation as Tony suggests, check heater core for blockage, and check that the flow of water is actually going thru the core: I've seen more than one control valve seat (at the head) blocked from disuse. A great-giant "lump-o-crud" in the head just at the valve mating surface that prevented water from flowing thru the valve.

Is the engine coming up to temp? PJ

Heat in an MGB? Who knew? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

When I lived "UpThere" where you are, Scott, the heater in my B would get the cabin so hot it had to be turned DOWN!

I always found the heat adequate for cool summer evenings with the roof down. For real heating in real winter you would need a lot more horespower. I have a memory in my youth of a 60 mile drive at about -20C that involved duct tap around the windows and large quilts. The heater only served to keep our feet from freezing solid. I must have been very desparate to get somewhere to pull the MGB out in a Canadian winter. Never tried it again.

Ever drive an old VW in 0 degree weather? The only car I ever owned that I needed an ice scraper on the inside! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif PJ

Daughter's Karmann Ghia came with the factory installed gas heater - I took that sucker off right away...still have it & am learning its worth more than the car!

Hey Tony, I'll bet there are some guys up north that would like to have that item! I didn't even know they came with a gas heater. Yup, I would have gave a couple of bucks for one back then, if I had a couple of bucks to spare back then. Hmm, that's why I drove an old VW with no heat! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif But I'm laughing now! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif PJ

Believe it or not, we still use gasoline-fired heaters in the Army. Scary as all get out, but warm.

I've had to scrape the ice off the inside of a VW also (Colorado) but never in a B. Shoot - blankets, gloves, and hats (duct tape is good also - never thought of that) and you can go all winter.
