No Birds!

For the first time, I can remember we haven't had any small birds for 2 months! The feeders are full and no birds! Crows are in abundance and a couple of woodpeckers hang around but very few other birds. Doves we have all year, but not since fall started. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this in your area. We have hawks, but have always had them. It's just a little baffling to me. :rolleyes2:

We have plenty of small birds here. Perhaps it's just a change in migration patterns (changing water availability?)

Plenty around here since last spring. Even Baltimore orioles, which we haven't seen for a couple of years.

Hitchcock would be proud -

It's just baffling to me as nothing has changed, even the Hummingbirds left earlier than in previous years!
We live in Ranch country, with lots of cattle and heavenly wooded in some areas, bird heaven!

Some possible answers here.

The bird house on my deck is full all time. It looks like an airport with the birds coming and going.
By the way, the “birdhouse” is a bug catcher that the birds commandeered many years ago.

I've been reading up on no birds in our area. We've had no birds, other than crows, for approximately two months now, the experts say an outbreak of Avian Flu in poultry has reached a critical stage in some states, it also can reach out and affect wild birds. Since we have never been without all kinds of birds in the past 14 years we've been here, I think it's a strong possibility that this area, along with others, has been affected by the bird flu! There's no other reason I can think of. Migration were aware of and we look for the different species during the year but all are gone! Hopefully, we'll see the winter birds come back, we have our hopes up. PJ

You might want to contact the Oklahoma Wildlife Department - maybe they can shed some light.

Thanks, Basil I'll contact them and see if they know about this situation in our area.

I’m experiencing the same thing in RI. I had let my feeders get empty a few weeks ago when I was away. I thought that might explain it and they would be back in a few days as they have before. The only ones I now have are the Cardinals mourning doves and sparrows. I used to have finches, titmouth, several kinds of wood peckers and wrens. I do have an awful lot of hawks in the area and I just saw one cruise by my feeder.

This was our shortest year for our purple martins (142 days). Saw Grebes in spring, hummingbirds galore.(5 feeders ) until.three weeks ago. Robins let t when it got hot, one is back now. Plenty of doves yet. Woodpeckers still around. Chimney Swift's left two weeks after Martins and he night hawks left and the we saw a migration of Swift's and night hawks last month. Our bale eagles are building nests but the Cooper Hawks just will not leave.

Still no changes noted here in eastern Connecticut. Paul, please let us know what you learn from the Oklahoma DWC.

I'd think that avian flu would result in lots of dead or sick birds in an area - not an absence of birds.

Well, here we are again about the birds. No one seems to be able to give a straight answer as to why the birds have all disappeared in our area! From my first post on this, we've seen 4 small birds at different times, two Wrens, two Chickadees, and two I didn't recognize. Crows we have plenty of but the little screech Owls and Hawks have seemily disappeared also. We have one Dove that shows up at times but usually half a dozen is normal. Something is definitely wrong, but no one has a straight answer. We're just waiting now to see what Spring brings.

Ours are returning chicadees, wrens, one robin, various woodpeckers. But the Cooper Hawk never left. Due to heat and lack of moisture, they left. Slowly coming back as it rains sporadically. Niw, big question. How many bugs on your windshield? Mine was splattered first of spring, but now nothing but crop dust. Roundup used in yards kills bugs, then birds and bees. This year was the shortest time the Purple Margins were here in 25 yrs.. 144 days. Usually Mar 10- July and first of August. Have only seen a couple Goldfinches, used to see do,ens. All we can do is hope the ecosystems has not failed. But this climate does cycle every so many yrs. I remember in 1954 we slept outside it was so hot and dry. No mosquitoes either.

The word around here is that the birds moved out of California because of high taxes.

Or they expect to fall in the Pacific.

Latest studies show that the rest of the country is about to fall iff into the Atlantic. At least that is what our governor said in his last speech.
