Been meaning to post one and was surprised by the other.

Over in Spridget world we have been discussing rebuilding A Series transmissions - the discussion of which involved a member acquiring and scanning the third part of articles I had already scanned. Long story short it involved combining splitting reassembling and ultimately compressing various PDF files. Found this website:

NFI but, my heavens it is handy - easy to use, no size limits and if nothing else, compressed a 40 meg PDF file to just over 6! well worth a look if you are doing such things.

Changing this subject, but, still tech, we have a Smart TV - which isn't. Works great for Netflix etc but, using it for the web is a PITA due to less than helpful interface - So, over Christmas I purchased a Chromecast unit - inexpensive and now I can throw whatever is on my computer (or tablet or phone) onto the TV - but somehow it goes direct, so, having done it, I can carry on with other internet stuff - very cool piece of kit!
 
J-P - I've used that pdf compression site before. Very handy and a great time (and filespace) saver. Note however that any graphics (photos, etc.) will likely be degraded and dropped to a lower resolution when the file is compressed.

Regarding Chromecast - I just got one a few weeks ago and love it. However, I don't see how you can send *anything* from the laptop to the TV; instead, seems you can only use certain websites, like YouTube, Netflix, PBS, etc. Not just *any* file from the laptop, such as photos, mov, mp4 video files, etc.

Question: Does Chromecast only work if you are using google Chrome? Will it work with other browsers?
 
oops - just to clarify. I can't send *anything* from my laptop to the TV, but I can send any *webpage* (and its content) to the TV.

Sending stuff to the TV from the lap top? I guess I'll have to upgrade a little from this to a slightly later model. PJ

Now that is cool! I remember when we got our first TV, I was 7 years old. The cabinet was about 4 foot wide and the B&W screen was a monstrous 5 inches. Motorola or Philco, DuPont, not sure which. Soon as the antenna was installed on the house, I never knew pop had so many friends. Our quiet little house was full of people I didn't know on Friday nights, to watch the fights! Every Friday was the same. What a blast it was when we got our next TV with a 10 inch screen! :highly_amused: PJ

Ironically Motorola is still showing moving pictures on a five inch screen - course now you can put it in your pocket and make phone calls with it
