Next steps in engine teardown?

Picked up a set of digital calipers from Harbor Freight this past weekend, and I've got some time ahead this week. It's time to finish the engine tear down.

I've got the head off and the studs out. I'm assuming I need to remove the valves (need a spring compressor I assume) to finish off the head disassembly. Then I'm guessing the rest of the block needs to come apart -- timing cover and gears, crank, cam, etc.

Any particular order other than what's in the manuals? What should I be measuring as I pull stuff apart?

Leave the valves in and let the machine shop take care of them when they redo the seats, skim the head, boil it, install new valve guids, and put new freeze plugs in the back of it. ie you have gone as far as you should with the head.

Yep, next is timeing cover and pan, timeing chain and gears, cam and oil pump. Then you get to flip it over.

I'll have to ask Hap how he wants the head...

I agree.

Usually the machine shop needs the head assembled. They need the valves for checking the vale seats, unless you are getting all new valves. For the machine shop, it's easier to remove and reinstall the valves than to keep track of loose valves with the marking and shipping. They can also determine the necessity of new valves.

They can measure straightness of the head, which I would prefer over skimming-first. It may need skimming anyway, but IMHO I wouldn't do it if it's not necessary.

It will probably need valve guides, but they could also be checked first. I had an old rusted head laying around for 25 years and amazingly the guides were good. New ones are chaeap though. If getting stainless valves, you need bronze guides.

Get the new freeze plugs.

I would bet Hap wants it complete. We will see.

And have it skimmed reguardless, and I bet Hap does it that way as well.

Complete, I disassemble on my end. As for head decking I straight edge check them, most of them need a clean up, they normally get a low spot in the middle between the combustion chambers, you have to be kinda be careful with a 1275 head, they have such small combustion chamber to start with, so just a clean up, normally no more than about .005".

dang another duplicate post, it's Monday all day long /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Boy, really makes me feel good when the professionals and I agree,LOL.

Way to go Hap. You got my vote.

Well, I've got my direction now. Head stays as-is, to be sent along with the carbs to Hap for work. I hope to be able to finish up the block tear down this week, so I can get going on that work as well. Next few months are going to be fun!

(and probably a bit expensive /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif )
