As some of you know a large developer has bought up most of Coney Island’s amusement zoned area. They have thrown out almost all of the businesses on their land to force the city to rezone it to a smaller amusement area. It appears that their plans are to use ocean front property to make a profit rather then preserve any of its history. This is through high-end condos and retail stores.
Well today they struck a real blow to those of us that reside here and also those who have fond memories, by refusing to extend the lease of Astroland that has been here since 1964. This will most likely crumble the remaining business that operate here and provide a much needed seasonal and full time employment.
If you are near, this is most likely your last chance to see Coney Island before it becomes a desolate lot, so that this developer has more bargaining power. Basically out of greed to get the rezoning that they want and to make a larger profit. Contrary to a lot of other places NYC real estate is still at a premium and ocean property, ferget bout it.
