I am having difficulty determining which numbers identify the body, and which numbers on the engine identify it.
Could someone please point me to the right numbers. Thanks.

Where to find numbers varies from car to car, but the basics are the same: engine number is stamped to the top of the engine block (towards the rear on the driver's side), body number is on a sperate plate riveted to the firewall (passenger side on my TR250), the commision number (or VIN) is on a seperate plate which also shows date of manufacture, and is duplicated on a plate visible through the windshield on the driver's side.

If you get your hands on most any parts supplier's catolouge, they will show the locations and meanings of the numbers.

Welcome to the forum - from one newbie to another!

Hi, Bev, and welcome to the Forum.

It would help to know the year and model of your car, and exactly which plates you're looking at. Earlier TR's had a commission number mounted on a plate on the bulkhead (firewall). But there are two brass plates which designate the body number, and the engine number was stamped on the side of the block.

Let us know what car you have and which numbers you're looking at, and we can probably help you out.

Hi Mickey,
Thanks for the welcome. I have a 73 TR6. I recently joined the Vintage Triumph Registry and they asked me for the Vehicle ID, which I had no problem with, but also asked for the body number, and engine number. There are two numbered plates on the bulkhead. Are both of them the body numbers? On the engine there are several sets of numbers, most are raised numbers and sort of unreadable. There is one 6-7 digit number engraved clearly on the front (grill) end of the engine, and I would think that would be the engine number, but just wasn't sure.
Thanks,
Bev

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome. I have a '73 TR6, and have been learning a lot. The Vehicle ID, I had no problem with, but there are two numbered plates on the bulkhead, which I thought to probably be the body number, but not sure which one or if both were called "body number" . The engine has several series of numbers stamped on it, most are raised and difficult to read, but there is one clearly engraved number at the end of the engine (toward the grill), would that be the engine number?
I sure appreciate the help.

According to Moss Motors, the body number of a '73 TR6 is found on the right-hand side of the firewall, the vehicle number is on the left-hand side wheel arch, and the engine number is on the left-hand side of the block. Hope this helps.
