Newbie from NH with a 1973 spitfire 1500

Hi everyone.

my name is Scott. I just purchased a 1973 spitfire to restore. I am hoping that I can pick up some knowledge from this site as I have never owned a british car before.

I do have one question.

On the SU carb that is on the spitfire what is the black knob at the top of the carb for? I heard someone mention to me I am suppose to put oil in that? Is that true and why?

Welcome Scott!
That is correct, put some oil in there to help lube everything. I use Mystery Oil in mine, and add some every once in awhile when I see that it gets low.

As for the black knob, yes, that's the cap to which a plunger is attached. The plunger is dampened by light weight oil, which gives resistance for the piston....

Thanks for the link it will be interesting reading I am sure. It might even help me when I try to rebuild my carb.
 
SU's are an easy rebuild. The only tricky part is if you have to rebush the throttle shafts. Whatever you do, DON'T mix up the pistons and chambers on dual setups; they're matched sets.
