I juat saw where Christchurch,NZ was hit by a
7.0 (or 7.4 depending on the source).Luckily it hit ear-
ly in the morning (around 4:30 AM).No deaths reported yet.
I hope any of our memebers there are safe.

My best friend is in place close to the east coast well south. Was rattled outta bed at 0430 and survived.
 
Glad to hear your friend only got awakened at 4.30,Doc. I'm sure he felt quite a jolt.Oamaru isn't that far from ChCh. :thumbsup:

And the building code in NZ is very strict regarding earthquakes.

They're a self-sufficient lot. We here have lost a lot of that.

My pal said he thought th' CAT was pullin' th' blanket off th' bed... then came fully awake an' realised th' eight pound cat couldn't move th' bed around th' room. :smirk:
 
I agree - those Kiwi's are a lot like America was in the '50's.
When we could take a trip "anywhere in the world" for our 35th,I
suggested England & NZ.We agreed on NZ,then family problems inter-
vened.It's past our 32nd,& still haven't made it there.
Kiwi's are a hardy lot - most of them honest,hard working people.
Why can't we be this way again?

I survived the '89 Loma Prieta 6.9 earthquake. It is a nerve racking experience. We lost six people. The after shocks just keep coming for days and weeks after the event.

The county was without power for four days and most roads leading in and out of the county were destroyed. Plans to supply the area with food and other necessities by sea were started, but luckily, not needed.

Amazingly, there were no problems with looting or other civil problems. From my experience, when disaster strikes, the community will pull together. At least here it did on that and the following days.

The Kiwi's will do just fine.
 
Nice to hear so many good comments about us Kiwis... It is amazing there is no loss of life. And now there is flooding in the North Island. Fun times... x)
