New way to Install gasket between soft top and windscreen frame.

At least I think this is a new approach.

My Midget did not have a gasket but did have the channel it is supposed to fit in. I purchased the Moss gasket from Peter C. It did not fit very well for a few reasons and did not like to stay in the channel after a frustrating time fitting it. I also noted that there was no good seal between the channel and the top frame which would have almost certainly caused a leak during a rain.

This morning I spent some time thinking things over and came up with a different approach. Now my Moss gasket is an excellent fit and will not leak.

The first thing is to remove the aluminum channel then cut the gasket to length. With that done slip the gasket into the channel. That is done to use the channel for a guide to make holes in the gasket to have a place to insert the screws and the Phillips screw driver.

With the gasket in the channel I had the guide for placing the hole locations. A 1/8" drill worked to make the holes. Next I removed the gasket and used a scissors to cut away the part of the gasket that was supposed to fit in the channel.

Then I inserted the channel inside the gasket.

I found the original screws too short to get purchase in the top frame. Instead I used #8 x 3/4" Phillips pan head screws. They worked great.

Last evening Shirley and I had a very difficult time latching the top with the gasket in the channel. Today I did not have much trouble latching it with this new approach.

Another huge benefit is that the gasket is extremely well attached. Also the gasket now not only seals the windscreen side but also seals the side against the top frame.

Good idea, Tom, the new gaskets don't fit worth a d**m. I'll keep that in mind but I think the top I have with the new gasket that I really fought to fit has the rail riveted in.

Kurt.

Thanks for the tip. I ended up reusing an old gasket when I redid my top because the VB gasket was as ill-fitting as the Moss one. I may give that a whirl at the end of this driving season.
