So I finally have a new water pump and a new pulley. All nicely painted black. What I'm seeing, feeling is a force fit to put the pulley on the water pump shaft. Shaft and pulley bore are free of paint. So should it be a free fit or a mild force fit?
Your thought's greatly appreciated.

Definitely a light press fit. A free fit will allow the pulley to work against the shaft and eventually fail.

Be sure to support the other end of the shaft when installing the pulley, so the force doesn't get transmitted through the bearings.
 
Also support the threaded part of the pulley shaft with some washers if applying any force to the pulley shaft when installing. I managed to bend and weaken that part of the shaft and it eventually broke off.
 
Thanks! How about a little copper slip on the shaft? Or is that gilding the Lily, so to speak?

Well I answered my own question. I was able to tap the pulley on with a wood interface until it got to the threaded part. I then used a large impact to snug it down. I used a wooden mallet to get it on with.
Done deal, yea!

Great -- now imagine the fun you'll have getting it off of there someday.

I've posted it before but FYI. here's simple puller for removing the pulley with the pump still on the engine:

I've made up one of those pullers awhile back...quite effective.

With all that effort, I hope that the new pulley doesn't rub against the pump casting (as mine did). I had to r&r mine several times to get the squeak out.
 
I'm sure you know...but be sure the inside of the pulley clears the pump by a fair margin. Especially the boss for the grease fitting, which occasionally will rub.
