new vent rubber seal

Hi all I have a problem with my new rubber seal on my air vent on my tr3. The new rubber causes the vent to stick up about ¼ inch too high. Does anyone have a trick to lower it? I bought this one from Moss and was thinking that perhaps the ones from TRF might be better quality? Anyway I have an old one that is smaller, but a little beat up. Incidentally, I found out the hard way that the wipers should go in before the vent. Some of my restorations friends leave things like door rubber and trunk rubber to just wear in and they do, but I do not think this will get the wear to break in.

You suggest that you use the older compressed seal or you could try removing the rubber completely. I accept that you get lots of rain in your part of the left coast, but if you close the vent without the seal during the rain, I don't think you will get much rain running into the tiny gap all around. If it does, there is the drain hose that should take the collected water away.

BTW the hose comes out behind the rear carb. If you have a TR3, it should be like my early TR3A.

Should all the 3A scuttle drain hoses come out there? Neither of my two do and I am just curious. I want to do it correctly when I get to that point.

FWIW When TS39781LO came to me, it had a factory-looking tee, repleat with rolled-wire hose clamps, joining the scuttle drain & battery box drain, just above the hole in the transmission tunnel. The car was relatively unmolested, but had been wrecked and repaired a few times so it's possible it got changed. The TRA judging guidelines also do not mention this variation.

However TS13571L had the remains of the arrangement that Don shows, so I put it back that way. ISTR the replacement seal even came with the hole in it.

IMO the main purpose of the scuttle vent 'seal' is to keep the lid from rattling when closed. I drove without one for some time, and that's the only ill effect I noticed.

The seal I just installed from TRF does make the lid sit very slightly above the level of the scuttle, but nowhere near 1/4".

OK you guys got my attention with the drain. I think I got the triangle shaped piece, but I know for sure that I don't have the drain pipe shown in Dons photo. I also would love more information on this. Sorry Steve I was no help with your question.

1/4 inch I'd remove and trim some then reset, I wouldn't trim 1/4 tho but slightly less as it will set. Are you sure it's not catching on the lid lip, I have a Moss unit and it fit fine.
My drain tube set up looks like Don's on my 56 TS14502 L.

Repro vent seals have caused the lid to sit too high since Adam was a boy.

Use a couple of flat stainless washers under the hinge to pack the back of the vent lid up so it sits down better at the front.
