Tom, I too had great years of service from both my '87 Ford Ranger and my '02 Ford Ranger, but you indicated your friend was looking to buy new. Ford discontinued the Ranger in 2011.

Tom, You know it's true, when you ask anyone what is the best of anything, It's usually what they bought and had a fair amount of service from. As far as vehicles are concerned, it depends on how their taken care of and driven that matters. A lot of so called NO GOOD vehicles are driven without care, never greased, rarely serviced or never serviced at all and are specified as junk, I wonder why! I have a brother-in-law who gets 2 years out of a truck! He beats the heck out of them. He's had every brand out there and complained about every one of them but the last one, until it's had enough and quits. Every vehicle out there has been scrutinized by many different independent auto testing firms who give their reports without bias. Those reports are the ones your friend should read and draw his conclusions from which one would suit his needs. JMHO. PJ

All fair comments, but I'm sticking to my story. MY '98 V6 4WD extra-cab, step side Ranger was a nasty little beast that cost me more money and more frustration than it was ever worth. Without exaggeration, it NEVER passed it's yearly state safety inspection. Not once! While the body never rusted -at all- the frame was disintegrating at 10 years old. The final straw for me was the electronic front hubs.
And the 16mpg.
Years after I got rid of it, I still get recall notices for it. Just a few years ago there was a recall for -yet another- spontaneous fire hazard related to the wiring.
