new tonneau - what are these??

my apologies for the low quality photo, from my cell.

I just purchased a tonneau for the Midget, and there are 2 flaps on the top center of the cover. anyone have an idea what they are for?

My quick guess is that there are two snap-posts behind the seats, very low on the back deck that these hook to when the tonneau is folded over the tonneau bar.

I have to agree; Those two snaps would be to secure the tonneau (1 side or both) when its rolled up and tucked behind the seats. Prevents it blowing around or blowing away.

Another thing it could "Possibly" be is a place to hang your cup holder for your Beer while cruising along!!

Behind your seats you should see "tonneau" snaps (Similar to the one in the center of your dash). Those little flaps will snap right into place and you can be on your way!!! :driving:

I thought those snaps were to hold the thing to the floor while it's installed but the seating area exposed. If you don't have a tonnaeu bar, you can't use them. You unsnap the front, unzip and fold it done over the bar behind the seat and use the snap to keep it taut. No?
 
Behind the seats is a slotted bracket on both sides, attaches to the convertible top pivot point. Tonneau Bar is shown in the MOSS catalog.
 
I always wanted one of these tops and almost ordered one. Then I looked in the trunk under the spare and there it was folded up that the PO never told me about. I was told they are used with a tonneau bar which I dont have.

I think the "headrested" Midgets (at least the 1500s) didn't use the tonneau bars. You'd have to buy the slotted brackets and bars separately, from The Usual Sources. Like theleisure said, it'll fit fine without 'em.
 
I think the bar simply provides a high spot to fold the cover down over, toward the floor, to help keep it taut. I watched ebay all year and found some bars for my '63 that a guy had pictured with a full frame top, talked him into selling me the bars for $20. I haven't used them yet. I used the tonnaeu all summer to cover the cockpit while parked but going down the road it flapped too much (thus my search for bars). I don't have snaps anywhere though so I have some work to do yet maybe, if the bar doesn't help enough without snaps. You might be able make a bar without too much trouble. I love the tonnaeu cover and hope I can keep it on when driving. Makes it nice: get to destination, zip up and snap to cover the whole cockpit.
 
ahh, now it makes sense, it isn't one or the either, you should be using both the bar and snaps.

I can see now unzipping the tonneau, dropping it over the bar and snapping it in

now I gotta get me a bar !! is it 1 bar? 2 pieces?
 
I used mine all the time without the bar and it worked fine. However, the fit will vary greatly based on car a tonneau differences.

and it provides a high point so that water will run off. Some just use a beach ball inflated underneath
 
With the bar and the tonneau snapped behind the seats I think you'll find it's more useful than when its up. Unzip the zipper enough so that you can open it while driving and you'll be amazed at how much useful stuff you can stow back there without any worry of it blowing out or being seen by prying eye's.
KA. (I've seen bars temporarily made up out of electrical conduit)
 
Anyone have a pic or two of where the actual snap posts are behind the seats? I have the tonneau & tonneau bar I bought used, but dont know where the snap posts mount behind the seats
 
Note that despite the picture at Moss, the bar (at least one for MKI Midget) doesn't go straight across (it would hit the seat) it curves backward (toward rear of car, than across). You could make your own I'm sure but so much easier to find used if you can, $100 for a set at Moss is nuts (for my vintage anyway). A mix of proper gauge conduit and elbows and all might do it nicely for cheap.
I like to ride with tonneau on covering the passenger side. Looks cool, keeps your stuff in the car, easy to "secure" your vehicle when you get where you're going, protects the interior from sun damage too. I like tonneaus, can you tell? Maybe even reduce drag a bit and you go FASTER....maybe not.
