I'm an British born and raised India guy came to the US when I was 22 to study. Now 50. Bought an OK running '71 Stag in 1999 and now am working on a 2nd '71 Stag.

I live in Cupertino, California. Am married with two boys who I hope will take ownership of both Stags when can drive.

Hi Sujit, welcome to the asylum. I hadn't realized you weren't on BCF.

Just out of curiosity, what did you find inside that gearbox I sold you? Was it the bearing between the input and output that was making noise?

Sujit, welcome to the BCF! You've come to the right place.

Great idea to get your boys involved with the Stags, one for each of them is perfect. I don't know how old they are, but maybe you could set some kind goal of them being able to perform all routine maintenance by the time they get their driver's licenses.

Please post some pics when you get a chance, and once again, welcome.

Hi Randall,
The only major thing I noticed while taking the gearbox apart was one broken washer on the end of the gearbox's output shaft.

One of the syncho rings was worn with a slight grove in it.

On the forks in the top gearbox cover, where the lever goes into are slightly more worn than from my OD gearbox. So reverse goes in without lifting the lever. I can slide it into reverse.

I've mixed up the bearings between two gearboxes but dont recall any issues with the one you mention. However, in my OD gearbox one of the needle rollers in the layshaft bearing was missing.

Two large bearing for the input and output shafts are noisy, but I'm not sure which gearbox they came out of.

Interesting. I must've gotten confused and sold you the "good" one  Oh well, no matter.

Welcome aboard sujitroy! Isn't there some little firm that makes computers in Cuppertino?
