43 years of wanting a Jaguar.....working on all the Brit cars in the shops I worked in and ran.....and now I have one!

1964 MKII, RHD, 2.4L.
Last owner had it for 30 years.

Been driving it virtually every day for a month now.
Rain or shine (at least the Lucas wipers work!).

I will have some questions as time goes by specific to RHD and cars sold in England.

Congrats! & welcome...drop by the Jag Forum & post some photos!

Welcome aboard - and do me a favor and update your Profile to at least show town and state (wild guess - Tacoma Wash?)

Basil

:savewave: Welcome!

Close.
But not Taco Mama.
I'll figure out how to do that in a bit.
Confuser connection is slow tonight.

Hi, welcome to the Forum! Good luck with the Jag!

WOOHOO!! Welcome to th' house! A fellow LBC wrench AND Jag saloon owner... obviously a masochist of th' First Water. You're gonna fit right in!

:savewave:

I tried posting a properly-sized picture, it gave me some long error message.
I'll try again.

You know, all these years I told folks I'd love to own a Jag, but when I was working on cars for a living, I could not afford the time to maintain one.

A little over 8-1/2 years ago, some moron who didn't understand the mandate of a "STOP" sign kind of stopped that.

This car, well, paint it needs....peeling in places.
Rock solid underneath.
Spare tyre well, dry and solid, floor pan, dry and solid.

Had AC, put in when the car was in Singapore, yanked that out, today put the two acorn nuts and a couple of "D" washers when I removed the last two standoffs for the AC.
Got all the heater control bits yesterday, glass beaded this morning and painted.
Will hang tomorrow sometime.

I HATE to see cars that some bozo in a gas station figured he'd prove what a British Car Mechanic he was.

The coil brackets on the front of the cylinder head were gone.
Coil mounted UNDER the fuel filter.
The vertical inner air cleaner bracket was gone, so they pulled the choke line bracket off the rear two head studs and mounted it in the center, with a homemade bracket looping up at an angle.

The heater control valve was a joke.
One of those in-line units, plugged solid.
Got the right "tap" and it works now.

RR door hadn't opened in 20 years.
Rest of the doors had stiff or inoperable window regulators, and very stiff latches.
Mostly congealed grease.
Finished the last door Saturday.
All windows and doors work fine.

Putting in rear vent window seals, and put a "correct" operato on the RR.
The one on it was off some other model Jag, wouldn't hold the wing shut tight.

Aftermarket radio in the parcel shelf, with a nice leather-covered piece of wood to mount it.
The scuttle vent therefore hadn't opened in 20 years.
Does now!

Got an oil leak of the back of the exhaust cam (small), probably have to run the valves at some point.

Had RN9YC Champions in it, British market 2.4's need N-5's.
Took the "ping" away when hot when I fixed that.

No thermostat AT ALL.

Now, I probably need to get the correct one to shut off the bypass, but it stays where I need it at 82C with a 180° unit, so I'm happy.
My OLD Stant catalogue gave me a part number for Jag thermostats.......looked familiar.....flipped over to the Flathead Ford section....same number, part on the shelf, gasket on the peg on the wall.....

Ah, well.

TOC,

I've been in your situation many times. It never ceases to amaze me what I find has been done to our beloved little cars. But the "best thing ever" is always when you're able to repair something massively annoying by simply putting it right or doing the proper maintenance on it.

It's true of all cars, not just LBCs.... almost everything will/should work if you take care of it properly. I find that I spend between 20 and 50% of my time on restorations undoing shade tree mechanics.

I love those old Jag saloons, passed up one a couple years back (no space or time) and I'm still kicking myself.

Have fun!
Jody

Hey TOC,

Welcome to BCF, which is only SLIGHTLY less addicting than breathing or eating but not as addicting as LBC's themselves! Unless you are eating AND breathing while signed into BCF WHILE sitting in your LBC! LOL

I am not new to BCF, but am a new Jag owner as well, got my 56 Mk1 LHD 2.4 on Father's Day weekend....

Be sure to post pics when you are able...a total bunch of picture junkies here!

Welcome again, it's a blast here!

Peter

Hi There TOC,

Best wishes with the Jag.

Hey TOC, welcome to the forum. The only "improvement" I can suggest for the Jag is to swap in a Daimler 2.5 and you'll have a V-8 250. :jester: :jester:

Already measured it out for a "proper" V-8.

Working on trans adaptor ideas.

1953 3/4 Race Merc.
I think I can keep the air cleaner under the bonnet.

Radiator is going to be an issue.......but, since the Flathead is shorter in length, I think my spare 5-row core will fit.
