In-laws moved recently to a lower maintenance condo, Mum-in-law decided she'd downsize her inventory of kitchen gear. Gave Mitsy a Hamilton Beach "stay or go" 6 quart slow cooker. Initially I was skeptical but used it for the first time this weekend, threw together a batch o' bean soup. Big ol' hamhock, a couple "16-beans" bags, carrots, celery, green pepper, chili-pepper, grated a spud...

That sucka ROCKS!

Prior to this I always did the soup in a pot onna range, had to baby-sit it.

I'll now be putterin' around th' hovel fer a few days. :eek:nthego:

We do ribs, pull pork, chili, even lasagna in ours

My mom cooks pulled pork in hers (a Hamilton Beach) all the time, my wife uses hers (a crock pot) to cook all kinds of things, even Cornish game hens and chicken wings. Those things are great, though I admit most of the cooking I do (beans chili and such) tends to get done on the range.

We've amassed a collection of the things. They're fantastic. On the days where I have to work and the wife has school we load the thing up before we start the day and by supper time we have a wonderful hot meal. Oh, and they a fantastic job on chili as well.

I've got some good recipes if you want other experiments that allow you to play with the cooker.

I actually didn't give the thing much consideration. Usually I use "navy beans" but Mitsy dragged home this collage of colors/shapes in a bag, sooo... after I soaked the beans it was apparent the batch was too large for the usual pot, the cooker became 'plan-B'.

I'm now a believer.

hmmm.... next up, shovel that 'possum up off th' street out front of th' hovel!

Russ, I'm just up th' road a piece from you... wanna come fer din-din?

Not if it's slow cooked armadillo. How about a cup of coffee? Or I could spring for a beer.
Just up the road? You not in a grow house or a meth lab are you?

doc does not cook his armadillo slow... he's always in a rush.

Doc, you'll love it. I'm surprised you are a newbie to one. Crock pot is old school. Like the man said, load it up in the morning and dinner is ready when you walk in the door. If you do pork loins, brown 'em first or else they get light grey with a weird texture. I inject mine with bacon grease (it cooks out) to make 'em nice and juice w/ lots of flavor. Kelly says lifting the lid slows down cooking time about an hour so don't fidgit with it too much. The High settiing on mine drys stuff out too much. I only use it 5 minutes or so if I open the lid just to get back to temp.

If you do a beef roast, don't forget to put your taters and veggies in around it.

Funny story, my buddies wife was mad at me for months because I made fun of her digital Wolfgang Puck crock pot that didn't work. It's digital function quit working which killed the rest of the pot. Oh the irony, it's so new, advanced and wonderful it doesn't work! :highly_amused:

A crock pot has two settings, slow and slower, WTH you need digital function on something as technologically advanced as a toaster...

Kelly still has hers from college...which once belonged to her mother cira 1970's.

Digital crock pot...

Anyone interested in an electronic brick? :friendly_wink:

Have a crock pot here, chicken soups, veggie 'n such were about all it got used for. This thing is gigantic by comparison.

Usually there's meat on the Weber grill for meals, not much for using electricity for cooking that.

Just did a pork shoulder in the H-B overnight. Wow. Moist, falls apart just lookin' at it. Just had a sample with BBQ sauce on a couple slices of bread. Happy!

Coffee? NP! We go thru a couple brew-ups a day. Beer? Always (but post 1700 hrs.).

Frequently there's a gathering of CarMunglers here in front of the garage, sittin', sippin' an' swapin' lies back-n-forth about car stuff, world affairs and suchlike.

naaahh. Standard '80's Florida CB hovel. In th' slums of Brandon.

There is no way I believe you don't believe in the 11th commanment
#11. It is 5:00 somewhere.

I have a small crockpot I do oatmeal in for winter mornings here. If you google crockpot oatmeal there are all kinds of recipes. Tonight we had perogies done in the big one .

We have an oval shaped H-B pot. Bigger than normal but not huge. You got a pic of the thing?

Russ, not to worry about Doc. He hasn't lived in a meth lab since the last one burnt down. Of course, that was before he went to prison.

That lab was across th' street and a couple houses down, Billy. Burn'd down in th' early '90's.

...as fer th' "prison" thing... I wuz wrongly accused of molestin' a lady meter reader. It's all been sealed. I swear.
